    Use of shallow samples to estimate the total carbon storage in pastoral soils

    Using data from pastoral soils sampled by horizon at 56 locations across New Zealand, we conducted a meta-analysis. On average, the total depth sampled was 0.93 ± 0.026 m (± SEM), and on a volumetric basis, the total C storage averaged 26.9 ± 1.8, 13.9 ± 0.6 and 9.2 ± 1.4 kg C m⁻² for allophanic (n=12), non-allophanic (n=40) and pumice soils (n=4), respectively. We estimated the total C storage, and quantified the uncertainty, using the data for samples taken from the uppermost A-horizon whose depth averaged 0.1 ± 0.003 m. For A-horizon samples of the allophanic soils, the mean C content was 108 ± 6 g C kg⁻¹ and the bulk density was 772 ± 29 kg m⁻³, for non-allophanic soils they were 51 ± 4 g C kg⁻¹ and 1055 ± 29 kg m⁻³, and for pumice soils they were 68 ± 9 g C kg⁻¹ and 715 ± 45 kg m⁻³. The C density —a product of the C content and bulk density —of the A-horizon samples was proportional to their air-dried water content, a proxy measure for the mineral surface area.     Model-Based Decision Support for Industry-Environment Interactions

    Applied systems analysis is -- or should be -- a tool in the hands of planners and decision makers who have to deal with the complex and growing problems of modern society. There is, however, an obvious gap between the ever-increasing complexity and volume of scientific and technological information and tools of analysis relevant to large socio-technical and environmental systems, and the information requirements at a strategic planning and policy level. The Advanced Computer Applications (ACA) project builds on IIASA's traditional strength in the methodological foundations of operations research and applied systems analysis, and its rich experience in numerous application areas including the environment, technology, and risk. The ACA group draws on this infrastructure and combines it with elements of AI and advanced information and computer technology. Several completely externally-funded research and development projects in the field of model-based decision support and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) are currently under way. As an example of this approach to information and decision support systems, one of the components of an R&D project sponsored by the CEC's EURATOM Joint Research Centre (JRC) at Ispra, Italy, in the area of hazardous substances and industrial risk management, is described in this paper. The PDA (Production Distribution Area) is an interactive optimization code (based on DIDASS, one of a family of multicriteria decision support tools developed at IIASA) and a linear problem solver, for chemical industry structures, configured for the pesticide industry of a hypothetical region. The user can select optimization criteria, define allowable ranges or constraints on these criteria, define reference points for the multi-criteria trade-off, and display various levels of model output, including the waste streams generated by the different industrial structure alternatives. These waste streams can then be used to provide input conditions for the environmental impact models. With the emphasis on a directly understandable problem representation and dynamic color graphics, and the user interface as a key element of interactive decision support systems, this is a step toward increased direct practical usability of IIASA's research results

    Comparative studies of compatible and incompatible pepper–Tobamovirus interactions and the evaluation of effects of 24-epibrassinolide

    The aim of study was to gain a deeper knowledge about local and systemic changes in photosynthetic processes and sugar production of pepper infected by Obuda pepper virus (ObPV) and Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV). PSII efficiency, reflectance, and gas exchange were measured 48 and/or 72 h after inoculation (hpi). Sugar accumulation was checked 72 hpi and 20 d after inoculation (as a systemic response). Inoculation of leaves with ObPV led to appearance of hypersensitive necrotic lesions (incompatible interaction), while PMMoV caused no visible symptoms (compatible interaction). ObPV (but not PMMoV) lowered F v /F m (from 0.827 to 0.148 at 72 hpi). Net photosynthesis decreased in ObPV-infected leaves. In ObPV-inoculated leaves, the accumulation of glucose, fructose, and glucose-6-phosphate was accompanied with lowered sucrose, malt oheptose, nystose, and trehalose cont ents. PMMoV inoculation increased the contents of glucose, maltose, and raffi nose in the inoculated leaves, while glucose-6-phos phate accummulated in upper leaves

    Im vorliegenden Beitrag sollen die syntaktischen Funktionen der Partizipien Perfekt in einigen Berthold von Regensburg mittelhochdeutschen Predigten untersucht werden. Zunächst wurden alle Arten von verbalen Formen mit den untersuchten Adjektiven dargestellt, anschließend wurden kontroverse Beispiele mit Merkmalen des Partizips II und des Adjektivs analysiert. Es wird festgestellt, dass der Partizip II der untersuchten Periode verschiedene syntaktische Funktionen hat. У представленій науковій статті проведено дослідження синтаксичних форм дієприкметників минулого часу у середньоверхньонімецькому періоді на прикладі проповідей Бертольда фон Регенсбург. Спочатку були представлені усі види дієслівних форм з досліджуваними дієприкметниками, тоді проаналізовано спірні приклади з ознаками дієприкметника й прикметника. Встановлено, що дієприкметник минулого часу досліджуваного періоду має різні синтаксичні функці

    The article discusses blending as a little-investigated type of word formation in the modern German. In the paper blending is defined as a special type of word formation, as a process of intentional creation of a new word by joining parts of two or more words after clipping and/or where there is some form of phonemic overlap of the constituents. Blending is distinguished from other types of word formation such as composition and abbreviation. The basic word formation models of blends in the modern German are described; the structural characteristics of German blends are defined taking into consideration clipping and phonemic overlap in the process of combining lexemes to form a new word. Analysed type of word formation evidences that the described models of blends are productive word formation processes in the modern German language

    Use and implementation of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health with Children and Youth within the context of Augmentative and Alternative Communication: an integrative literature review

    Purpose: to discuss the implementation and use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY) among children and adolescents, within the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) field. / Methods: an integrative literature review. PubMed, Web of Science and VHL databases were searched for papers published between 2006 and 2017 that reported on the use of ICF and ICF-CY within the AAC context. Eighteen papers were reviewed and sorted into: Category i) papers which reported on the use of the ICF or ICF-CY with people who rely on AAC; and Category ii) theoretical papers or papers that used the ICF and ICF-CY to organize the results. / Results: papers used the frameworks with different purposes, including the characterization of the children and their environment, goal setting and measurement of the results of therapeutic intervention. The papers drew on all elements, however, Activities and Participation were the components most used. Parents or caregivers were most commonly consulted in classifying the children’s and young people’s profiles of functioning, followed by the Educators and speech and language pathologists. / Conclusion: classifications have shown advantages when used in the AAC field. Therefore, it is necessary to provide training in order for professionals to implement them in services

    Stellar Kinematics and Structural Properties of Virgo Cluster Dwarf Early-Type Galaxies from the SMAKCED Project. I. Kinematically Decoupled Cores and Implications for Infallen Groups in Clusters

    We present evidence for kinematically decoupled cores (KDCs) in two dwarf early-type (dE) galaxies in the Virgo cluster, VCC 1183 and VCC 1453, studied as part of the SMAKCED stellar absorption-line spectroscopy and imaging survey. These KDCs have radii of 1.8'' (0.14 kpc) and 4.2'' (0.33 kpc), respectively. Each of these KDCs is distinct from the main body of its host galaxy in two ways: (1) inverted sense of rotation; and (2) younger (and possibly more metal-rich) stellar population. The observed stellar population differences are probably associated with the KDC, although we cannot rule out the possibility of intrinsic radial gradients in the host galaxy. We describe a statistical analysis method to detect, quantify the significance of, and characterize KDCs in long-slit rotation curve data. We apply this method to the two dE galaxies presented in this paper and to five other dEs for which KDCs have been reported in the literature. Among these seven dEs, there are four significant KDC detections, two marginal KDC detections, and one dE with an unusual central kinematic anomaly that may be an asymmetric KDC.The frequency of occurence of KDCs and their properties provide important constraints on the formation history of their host galaxies. We discuss different formation scenarios for these KDCs in cluster environments and find that dwarf-dwarf wet mergers or gas accretion can explain the properties of these KDCs. Both of these mechanisms require that the progenitor had a close companion with a low relative velocity. This suggests that KDCs were formed in galaxy pairs residing in a poor group environment or in isolation whose subsequent infall into the cluster quenched star formation.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in Ap

    Prevalence of arterial hypertension in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing ablation — a prospective, cohort study

    Background Arterial hypertension is one of the major cofounders in the development of atrial fibrillation (AF) and hypertension is commonly found in AF patients. The aim of the study was to establish the prevalence of arterial hypertension in patients undergoing ablation, who are relatively young and healthy group of AF patients. Material and methods 266 consecutive patients admitted for AF ablation were screened for arterial hypertension. All patients had their blood pressure measured on admission by, prior to the ablation procedure by a qualified physician, according to the current guidelines. Also, medical records of patients were reviewed for the previous diagnosis of hypertension or taking hypotensive agents. Results The study group was predominantly male (65.0%; mean age 57.6 ± 10.1 years). Mean body mass index was 29.7 ± 5.0 kg/m2. Paroxysmal AF was present in 69.5% of patients. In 72.9% of patients hypertension was diagnosed previously. On admission, mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were 131.7 ± 16.7 and 80.7 ± 11.1 mm Hg. 123 (46.2%) patients had systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure values respectively > 140 and/or > 90 mm Hg. Patients with previously diagnosed hypertension were older (58.7 ± 8.7 vs 54.6 ± 12.7 years; p = 0.003), had higher BMI (30.3 ± 5.0 vs 28.1 ± 4.8 kg/m2; p = 0.002), and more often history of diabetes (10.8% vs 1.4%; p = 0.03) compared to non-hypertensive group. There were no differences in terms of history of dyslipidaemia, stroke, myocardial infarction or family history of cardiovascular disease. Conclusions In patients with AF undergoing ablation procedure, prevalence of diagnosed arterial hypertension is very high, much higher than in the general population. Nevertheless, majority of patients meet the criteria for adequate blood pressure control

    Evolution of Microstructure and Texture during Warm Rolling Of a Duplex Steel

    The effect of warm rolling on the evolution of microstructure and texture in a duplex stainless steel (DSS) was investigated. For this purpose, a DSS steel was warm rolled up to 90 pct reduction in thickness at 498 K, 698 K, and 898 K (225 °C, 425 °C, and 625 °C). The microstructure with an alternate arrangement of deformed ferrite and austenite bands was observed after warm rolling; however, the microstructure after 90 pct warm rolling at 498 K and 898 K (225 °C and 625 °C) was more lamellar and uniform as compared to the rather fragmented and inhomogeneous structure observed after 90 pct warm rolling at 698 K (425 °C). The texture of ferrite in warm-rolled DSS was characterized by the presence of the RD (〈011〉//RD) and ND (〈111〉//ND) fibers. However, the texture of ferrite in DSS warm rolled at 698 K (425 °C) was distinctly different having much higher fraction of the RD-fiber components than that of the ND-fiber components. The texture and microstructural differences in ferrite in DSS warm rolled at different temperatures could be explained by the interaction of carbon atoms with dislocations. In contrast, the austenite in DSS warm rolled at different temperatures consistently showed pure metal- or copper-type deformation texture which was attributed to the increase in stacking fault energy at the warm-rolling temperatures. It was concluded that the evolution of microstructure and texture of the two constituent phases in DSS was greatly affected by the temperature of warm rolling, but not significantly by the presence of the other phas
